Bob Lutz
Bob Lutz to lead Spirit of Shrewsbury parade
by Kate Daly - Community Advocate
Robert Lutz, 94, can add one more item to his list of Shrewsbury civic duties: grand marshal of the Spirit of Shrewsbury.

"Shrewsbury spirit is actually all of us in Shrewsbury," Lutz said. "It's nice that once a year they have a parade and celebrate the wonderful community we live in."

He should know. For 85 years, Lutz has called Shrewsbury home, attending local schools and working in one of Shrewsbury's institutions, Spag's. The first discount store in Shrewsbury, it was started by Anthony "Spag" Borgatti, Lutz's brother-in-law.

"I worked for him for over 50 years," he said.

Lutz seems to stick with his interests for a long time. In 1954, Shrewsbury moved to a representative town meeting, with elected members.

"I was elected at that point, and I'm still a Town Meeting member, 55 years [later]," he said.

Lutz has served on the Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations (SELCO) commis- sion since 1972.

"I have been a light commissioner for 38 years. I was first appointed in 1955," he said.

Lutz left the SELCO commission in 1960 to run for School Committee, where he stayed until 1972. Then he was again appointed to the SELCO commission.

After five decades at Spags, 54 years as Town Meeting member, 38 on the SELCO Commission and 12 on the School Committee and now, Spirit of Shrewsbury grand marshal, what does Lutz have to say?

"I don't know what else to say," he said, "except that I love Shrewsbury."
